My meds arrived in only 7 days and they totally are what they are supposed to be. The pictures on the website are exactly what you receive. They give you 20% more than what you pay for, also!

Let’s start with the obvious. If you’re visiting this website, then you probably already know what it is, but I’m going to cover this anyway for good measure.

What is Payforit?

Payforit is a mobile payment scheme which was originally set up by the four “big” UK mobile network operators, EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. It allows subscribers to purchase goods and services, directly from their mobile phone. Purchases made through Payforit are charged depending on whether the subscriber is on a pre-paid (or “Pay as you go”) plan, or whether they are on a pay-monthly plan.

In the case of a subscriber on a pre-paid plan, the charge will be deducted from the subscriber’s credit or airtime. If the subscriber is on a pay-monthly plan, then the charge will be added to their monthly phone bill.

How does it work?

Payforit provides the facilities to bill mobile users directly through their mobile phone. There are two common methods, single-click billing and Wi-Fi billing.

Single-click billing works only when the subscriber is browsing via their mobile data, and cannot work if the subscriber is using Wi-Fi. With single-click billing, all the subscriber needs to do is simply to click or tap a button, and the charge is immediately made. The phone number is automatically detected over mobile data, which is used for the billing of premium-rate services.

With Wi-Fi billing, things become more complicated. It is not currently possible to detect a subscriber’s mobile phone number through a Wi-Fi connection (unless it’s a “personal hotspot”, or mobile broadband connection, in which single-click billing applies instead), so the Payforit system will request the phone number of the subscriber. The subscriber enters their phone number, and a text is sent to that number with a confirmation code. The confirmation code needs to be entered into the Payforit system, in order to authorize the charge.

So, is it really a scam?

No. Payforit itself is not actually a scam. It is a legitimate payment scheme which is operating in the UK, and mandatory for UK subscribers, so you can’t turn it off either.

Then why are you calling it a scam?

The reason I’m calling it a scam is because of how easily it can be abused by scammers, especially in the single-click scenario, mentioned above. The single-click billing method requires no “real” authorization, other than clicking a green confirm button, whereas the Wi-Fi billing method requires the user to receive a text message, and enter information from that message into a website.

The problem with the single-click billing method is that it is very easy to simulate a user clicking or tapping a button using Javascript. Javascript is client-side (meaning that it runs on your device) code used widely on the internet to provide interactivity with websites. You won’t be able to tell the difference whether a user willingly clicked or tapped a button, or whether it was done with Javascript code, without the user’s consent. This leads to unjustified charges being made to subscribers.

I will produce a proof-of-concept page which shows this in action when I get some more time to work on this website.

I believe I have been scammed through Payforit. Can you help me?

Unfortunately, I cannot individually help you. However I will be posting articles on this website with advice on how to approach your mobile network operator, PhonepayPlus (the UK regulator of premium-rate services), and the Payforit merchant who charged you.

In the meantime, I recommend that you contact both the mobile network operator, and the merchant who charged you to discuss a refund. Ensure that any unwanted subscription services are cancelled with immediate effect.

Can I ask you another question?

Of course you can! Just use the contact form on this website. Make sure that you leave a valid email address, otherwise I can’t get back to you.
