Craps is a game of rounds. A round begins with the player (dice roller/shooter) makes a either Pass Line or Don't Pass wager. After placing a Pass Line or Don’t Pass wager, the player is required to roll the dice (called 'come-out' roll). The round immediately ends when any of the following occurs. The Don’t Pass Bet in Craps. B ecause the Don’t Pass bet is almost exactly opposite of the Pass Line bet, you might want to review our other article about the Pass Line where concepts and terms used in this article are defined, such as “flat bet.” The Don’t Pass Flat bet is a self-service bet, which means you make this bet yourself by placing your chips in the Don’t Pass area. The Second Stage of the Pass Line Bet: In this second stage of the craps game, the person rolling the dice will roll over and over again until one of two things happens. If the player rolls a seven first, the second stage is over, and the pass line bet loses. However, if the player rolls the point number first, then the pass line bet wins.

Craps Basics: Pass/Don't Pass Bets

The long, curving section along the edge of the table closest to where the players stand is called the Pass Line.

'Pass Line' Bets

The most basic craps bet is the Pass Line bet. When you place a Pass Line bet, you're betting with the dice. In other words, you're betting that the either a 7 or an 11 will be the first number rolled (called the 'come out' roll). If this happens, you double your money right away. If a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is rolled, this establishes a 'point.' When a point is set, you want that number to be rolled again, before a 7 is rolled (when the shooter 'sevens out'). If the shooter rolls the point before he rolls a 7, you double your money.

If the number rolled on the come out roll is a 2, 3, or 12 (called Craps), you lose. If, after a point is established, a 7 is rolled before the point number is rolled again, you also lose.

Craps Pass Line Betting Strategy

Placing a Pass Line bet is betting with the dice, and placing a Don't Pass bet is betting against the dice. Pass Line bets are also said to be 'betting right,' while Don't Pass bets are said to be 'betting wrong.' (Not that either is any better or worse a bet than the other -- this is just craps jargon.) Don't Pass bets are just the opposite of Pass Line bets. Rather than hoping for a 7 or an 11 on the come out roll, you're hoping for a 2, 3, or 12 (the losing roll of Pass Line bets). A 2, 3, or 12 will double your money on a come out roll if you've placed a Don't Pass bet. When a point is established, rather than hoping that the point number will be rolled again before the 7 shows up, you're hoping that the point won't be rolled again before the 7 shows up -- if the 7 comes first, you win.

Craps Pass Line Strategy

The pass line bet is the most common wager used in the game of craps. This is considered a line bet because there is a large line area on the table layout where you can place your chips. The bet itself is simple, you are essentially wagering that the shooter will roll a 7 or 11 on the come out roll to win. If the shooter rolls a 2, 3, or 12 (which are craps numbers), then the player loses the bet.

If the dice lands on a point number such as 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, then that number will be established as the point number. If you have wagered on the pass line, then the shooter must roll that same point number before rolling a 7 in order to win the bet. Remember, the seven is the most probable number to roll out of all the others. You basically have the advantage on the come out roll and the disadvantage if you have to roll the point later on in the round.

Winnings are paid out 1 to 1, so these are even odds. The actual odds are 251:244 of winning this bet and this is almost even by itself. Because of this, the house edge is only a small 1.41%, making this one of the best bets in the game and in the house. I displayed the bet below so you can get an idea of where this is on the craps table. If you click on the image, you can play the free flash game using this same table.

When players make a pass line bet, they can also wager an additional pass line free odds bet after the point has been established. These free odds bets have no house edge and are the best mathematical wagers you can make in any casino game!
