Everything here is on a grand scale though, a project that started out impressive and still continues to grow. The company that owned this resort casino, Caesar’s Entertainment, was bought by Harrah’s Entertainment a few years ago, but the company changed the name back to Caesar’s shortly afterward, in large part because this hotel casino is the centerpiece of all their holdings.

Caesar’s Palace was the vision of hotel builder Jay Sarno, who was told that it was a crazy idea to build a European style hotel and casino in Las Vegas. Sarno had started out pretty modestly, but he had some powerful connections. Former Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa arranged for his start in the business by setting him up with his first motel, but the union had an appetite for something much bigger, and in 1966, Caesar’s Palace was born.

Caesar’s Palace has had a very colorful history, starting with the million dollars Sarno spent on the opening day party. In 1967, Evel Knievel attempted a jump here, unsuccessfully, and barely survived. There were rumors of mob connections, which proved to be true, and Sarno ended up selling the place in 1969, as well as his other casino, Circus Circus.

Caesar’s attracted the biggest names in the business, including Frank Sinatra who came over from the Sands in 1967. He performed there until 1970, until Sinatra got into an argument with the staff at the casino over their not wanting to raise the maximum stakes, and a casino executive pulled a gun on him.

While Sinatra refused to make a statement to the police, he was plenty upset and walked out on his contract, only to return 4 years later. This was just a start of a long list of events that went on here, right on up to their being charged with money laundering in 2015.

Caesar’s Palace is designed after Ancient Rome, and the goal has been to make their guests feel like Caesar. In some ways they may have exceeded anything they had back then though. It has been called a Greco Roman Fantasyland, and not without good cause. The marble and the statues and the fountains here are very impressive indeed.
